I saw this report on 60 minutes with that cheerleader who had those horific side effects. I was wondering if the H1N1 Vaccine was safe or not. Does anybody know?

  1. Short andwer is YES.
Taking the H1N1 vaccine is the same thing as taking a regular flu vaccine. Think of it as the same soup with a different recipe. It is done under the same conditions and with the same precautions as the regular flu vaccinations.

Side effects that are common are headaches and soar arms the day of the shot or the day after. Some people will even get a slight fever the day of or day after.

The girl on 60 minutes that you are referring to had developed what is beleived to be Dystonia. This is not a confirmed diagnosis as of yet, and there has never been any history of a flu shot causing Dystonia. Therefore, it is possible that this could have been from something else. However, even if it was related to the flu shot, you'd be looking at a 1 in 30 million case as it is the only reported claim of its kind.

There is a serious neurological reaction called Guillain-Barre syndrome (GBS) that is caused by H1N1 vaccine. However this is about a 2 in a million chance. To put this into perspective... You are 2 times more likely to be struck by lightening than getting this diesase.

What if you choose not to get it?
The death rate of H1N1 (which is expected to be as deadly as the seasonal flu) is about 1 in 1000, or 0.1%.

    So to compare...
If a million people get the H1N1 flu, 1,000 people will die from it.
If a million people get the vaccine, 2 people will die from it.

However, this is always a personal choice.
