JFK Airport Airt Train Review

Anonymous said...
Subway access between JFK International Airport and Manhattan has gotten much easier in the past year, with the connection of the “Air Train” directly to the Howard Beach subway station.

To get from the airport to Manhattan, get on the train that connects the airport terminals. This will take you to the Howard Beach Metro Station. Once there, you will have to pay $5.00 for a single use Air Train card, which basically gets you onto the subway platform. You will also have to purchase subway fare into New York, which is $2.00 for a single ride. Multiple ride discount fare cards are also available.

Both the Air Train cards and subway fare cards are available at vending kiosks at the Howard Street Station, as well as from newsvendors at that location.

The Howard Street Station is served by the A train, which connects directly to the Bronx and to Manhattan. Travel time from Howard Beach Station to Penn Station is about an hour. Trains run frequently. During peak hours, trains may run as frequently as every three minutes.

The Howard Street station is a marvelous facility, full of glass, marble and natural light. It absolutely gleamed when I was there. My fellow passengers were a mix of students, businessmen and airport employees.

Note that the connection in Manhattan is at Fulton Street. On the return trip to the airport, you will again pay $5.00 at the Howard Beach Station in order to ride the Air Train from the Howard Beach Station to the terminal. The Air Train serves all terminals at JFK.

This connection to and from Manhattan is a breeze. Many Guidebooks, even those dated 2007, still contain confusing instructions about the Air Train, as the connection at Howard Beach is only about a year old now.
