Andrews University in Berrien Spring Michigan

Anonymous said...
Andrews University in Berrien Spring Michigan is a bunch of cheapskates. They charge over 18000 a year and then spend nothing on the men's dorm.

Meier Hall the undergraduate men's dorm needs to be torn down and replaced. The university has done nothing to renovate Meier Hall which was built in the 1960s. Meier Hall is a three story x-shaped dorm with no elevator and a poorly designed lobby. The University has done nothing to address the security in the men's dorms and stealing and even assaults occurred at the University. The university also placed Burman Hall 150 feet away from Meier Hall so that in the summer students have to cart all of their belongings down 3 flights of stairs and over 150 feet to Burman so that Meier can be used as a conference center. The deans also involuntarily assign room mates. The 4 exits from Meier Hall are poorly designed concrete stairwells with no asthetic senses and would be difficult to electronically secure. Anyone can enter Meier at any hour since the University doesn't secure Meier and probably still hasn't. One year the University tried to paste electronic access onto Meier so the students pulled down one of the doors with a truck and vandalized the security readers which is as well since the University was cheap with Meier Hall and wouldn't pay to address the accessibility problems and the lack of an elevator. It gets really old to walk up and down three ugly concrete stairs 3 times a day or a thousand times if you graduate there (If since since there were a lot of students that didn't stay 4 years).

Meier Hall has a poorly designed lobby which was probably constructed in the era before the super bowl. Meier Hall has no game room and doesn't provide multiple HDTVs like some University's do or apartment style conveniences. Hell, some University's have stopped assigning room mates and even allow students to bring an oversized bed.

A dorm made in the 60s is also not going to be wired for modern students which have laptops and TVs and Microwaves and computers and DVDs and a dozen electrical appliances.

The University also failed to address the accessability of Burman by providing 10 parking spaces in the back of Burman which makes it difficult to move into Burman. The back of Burman acts as the dean's driveway and is located near the deans apartment who has a nice apartment while the University chinced on the Graduates dorms which are chicken cages. The University named Burman Hall University Towers. Why? Because the University was planning to build two dorms like Burman but instead only built one dorm since Burman has flaws and tries to be too many things and has chicken cages for rooms which suck if you have an inmate for a room mate. So the University only built one Burman Hall but keeps the University Towers to remind everyone how mismanaged and incompetent they are.

You get what you pay for. A university that doesn't keep up the men's dorm is going to lose students to University's that do upgrade there dorms.

Also if you get a ticket from the Berrien Springs police watch out. The Berrien Springs Police Department has a very poor association with the male students at Andrews which was cultivated by a University that doesn't spend anything on an outdated undergraduate men's dorm. The University prosecutes male students and even expelled one student for a warez site and then wrote a front page article in the student paper instead of dealing with it internally and practicing reputation management for the male students.

The University has the attitude God forbid a bad womens dorm because then no one will go there. On another site they mentioned how seminary students take advantage of female students and a University that provides no money to upgrade the men's dorms which lowers the opportunities for affluent women to meet affluent men.

Contrast this with Miami University which locks down the dorms 24 hours a day to protect students. Andrews seminary students also have a poor reputation including the assault by a seminary student on the seminary teacher.

Andrews University Michigan does not publicly disclose the dorms expenditures. The university charges a lot but doesn't spend any money on the mens dorms which are offset by an elegantly designed womens dorm that attracted a Miss America contestant. Ali's daughter even went to Andrews. Prominent athletes wouldn't send there male children to Andrews since it lacks a poor sports program and probably spends nothing on the mens dorm. Graduate students tended to live off campus and it's rediculous to expect to go to a University and have to rent an apartment to get a decent room.

The University even used Meier as a hotel renting out rooms at the expense of students and thought of nothing when it spent 10 million dollars on the farm to renovate the stalls for the cows.

According to US News rankings they charge over 18000 per year.

Ohio State spent Ohio state spent 200 million to renovate their dorms and Andrews has no priority in rebuilding Meier Hall or Burman.

"Andrew Matthews, of the Association of College and University Housing Officers-International, said many dorms were built in the 1950s and 1960s and don't have the electrical capacity for power-dependent students."

Here is an alternate link of complaints.

  1. This is a quote from spectrum magazine about the seminary student assault. I can't believe someone would state this.

"Seminarians have a less than stellar reputation at Andrews, which is justified. Seminarians have developed a reputation with the local police as notorious wife-beaters with frequent domestic violence spats in the married student housing on campus. The single Seminarians are notorious for preying on the undergrad girls and sleeping around with naive victims. Don't get me wrong, the vast majority of Seminarians are good people, but there simply are way too many stories to not view it as a serious crisis."

If the seminary students were sleeping around other male AU students were as well. Which definitely went on.

  2. Andrews is violating the Fair Housing Action

    Fair Housing Act
Title VIII of the Civil Rights Act of 1968 (Fair Housing Act), as amended, prohibits discrimination in the sale, rental, and financing of dwellings, and in other housing-related transactions, based on race, color, national origin, religion, sex, familial status (including children under the age of 18 living with parents or legal custodians, pregnant women, and people securing custody of children under the age of 18), and handicap (disability).
